Remodeling a Home?

Consumers should choose remodelers in the same way they would choose any professional.  Look for expert skills, experience, permanent address, stability, and recommendations from previous customers.  Contact the Better Business Bureau and the HBA if there is some concern with an individual.

A residential remodeler must be registered
in the state of Louisiana.  He must also be able to show proof of workers compensation and general liability.

  Important Information:

Your home is too important to entrust to anyone but a remodeler who can save you money by doing the job right. Understand that the project and its successful completion depend upon effective communicatin between you and the remodeler with the least amount of disruption to your family.

Things to Look for When Choosing a Remodeler:

Accessibility: Does he maintain a permanent office, phone number, or answering service? You will want to be able to reach the remodeler quickly and easily -- especially at critical times.

Insurance: To protect you from claims arising from propery damage or job site injuries. Ask for a copy of the insurance certificates; verify by calling the remodelers insurance agent.

Longevity: How long has the company been in business?

Has he established relationships with the suppliers and subcontractors?

Does he have a trusted reputation among customers, peers, and people involved in all aspects of the industry?

Is he affiliated with a trade organization such as the Home Builders Association? These orginizations help to keep their members informed about new products, construction techniques, business practices, and industry issues.

You, the homeowner, should do your own investigation by checking references asked for and furnished by your respective remodeler. This is a must when doing business with anyone.

Your Remodeler Should:

  • Provide the best possible workmanship and materials in accordance with your budget requirements.
  • Ensure your remodeling job complies with applicable local building codes and regulations.
  • Guarantee the materials and workmanship by providing a written warranty for both labor and materials.
  • Provide proof of insurance and the appropriate permits.
  • Respond promply to your calls and answer your questions.
  • Provide all agreements, change orders, work schedules, and warranties in writing.

CAUTION: A person who asks for payment in full prior to beginning your remodeling project may leave with you with an incomplete or substandard remodeling job.
